How to use a Konica Revio KD-3300 digital still camera with Linux

This camera have a resolution of 3,1 megapixels and will delivered with 16 MB internal memory. It have a USB link.

After connecting the camera and the PC with the delivered USB cable, the camera is detected correctly immediately. It announces itself as drive at the system. If the SD card is inserted, this is readable. The internal memory is readable after removing the SD card. (note: first disconnect the Camera and the camera and the computer). You become access to the camera through the SCSI emulation of Linux. It must be mounted, like each other drive. In my case the camera is the second SCSI device. Access to the internal memory is possible by /dev/sdb, to the Compact Flash card by /dev/sdb1. Depending on, how much SCSI devices are attached, the name of the device can vary. Mounting will done as root with the following command:

mount /dev/sdb /mnt/camera ro -t vfat (internal memory)
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera ro -t vfat (SD card)

Now the photos can be read with each file manager/graphic program. The directory /mnt/camera must exist, but you can use another (empty) directory. So that also a normal user can mount the camera, still an entry in the file /etc/fstab is necessary. Open the file as root with a text editor of your choice. Add to the end of the file the following lines:

/dev/sdb /mnt/camera vfat ro,noauto,user 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera vfat ro,noauto,user 0 0

The last line must be closed with a ENTER. I advise you to proceed very carefully, because of a damaged fstab file it is necessary, that important system partitions can not more be mounted at startup. The device and the target directory you must adapt to your system. The option ro ensures that the storage medium of the camera is only readable.

Before the camera can be disconnected from the computer, you MUST remove it from the file tree. This occurs with umount /dev/sda or umount/dev/sda1.
