SuSE Linux 9.0 on a Toshiba Satellite 2180 CDT
Note: All configuration steps are to be executed as root.
Installation
With the normal installation process I will not deal here, because it is sufficiently described in the SuSE manual. I speek here only about the special features of this Notebook.
To make the CDROM drive bootable, the boot sequence in the BIOS must be set to CDROM/FDD/HDD. The PCMCIA controller must be configured as "PCIC Compatible". That can be canceled again after the installation. The automatic installation doesn't work, it hangs during the hardware detection. The manual installation must be used. The suggestions from the installatione routine are ok, they can be used.
Here runs the SuSE standard Kernel with Pcmcia and apm support (power management). The built-in mousepoint will addressed over /dev/psaux. The installation should be done without the configuration of the internal modem. I will speek about it later. As time zone UTC must be selected.
Configuration
SaX2 detects the graphic adapter (S3 Virge chipset) correctly. As monitor, LCD must be selected and as model a display with 800x600 pixel. The color depth is 16 bit. The S3Virge X-server will used. The soundcard will correct detected also.
Now let us speek about a problem child under Linux, named "WIN modem". That's no real modem, the functions, which are normally taken over of the modem chipset, will supplied here by software. And this software gives it usually only for Windows. But Lucent Technologies offers it also for Linux. The suitable kernel module you was shipped with SuSE Linux 9.0 (LTModem 8.26a) and can installed via Yast. The needed device files will generated during the installation. Now you can configure the modem via Yast.
Now you can configure the PCMCIA servive, without these steps linux hangs during bootup. Select in Yast System/Editor for /etc/sysconfig-files. There you select Hardware and PCMCIA on the left side. Set PCMCIA_SYSTEM to "external" and PCMCIA_PCIC to "i82365" and save the changes. Now you can undo the changes in your BIOS.
Thanks
I thank Eckhard Rueggeberg (www.eckhardt rueggeberg.de) for its description of the installation of Linux on a Toshiba Satellite 2210CDT. With whose assistance knew I unite my problems with the installation to solve (e.g. WIN modem)
