How to use Mustek 1200CU Plus with Linux

According to different sources this scanner should work with Linux. Therefore I have bought this Scanner at eBay. The installation under SuSE Linux 7.3 is a little bit problematic.

First you must install the Sane package. Sane is contained on the distribution CDs. I recommend XSane as scanner frontend. It offers more functions than XScanImage and is substantially faster than Kooka (KDE3). Additionally it works without problems as GIMP Plugin. But you should not use the version from the SuSE CDs, because it exists a newer version (for the moment 0.91). It can be downloaded from the project homepage (see below). This new Version have more features like a batch scan mode. To compile XSane you need Sane as well as the devel packages of Gimp 1.2.x and GTK+ 1.2.x. XSane uses gocr for text recognition.

The configuration with YAST2 fails, although the scanner makes a test scan after the manual selection from the list. All other scan programs does not find the scanner after the configuration with YAST2. Somet manual work is necessary. The error of YAST2 consists of the fact that in the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf a wrong entry will be produced. Open this file now as root with a text editor of your choice or create a new file. The once entry (if have you only this scanner) should be mustek_usb. If the file contains several entries, comment out these with a #.

Let us now speak about the file /etc/sane.d/mustek_usb.conf. It must contain the following lines:

/dev/usbscanner
option 1200cu_plus

Now should XSane detect the scanner at startup. You can download both files here.
